Maine Public Classical to air recent Midday Concert with cellist Sophie Shao and pianist John Blacklow

Tune in to Maine Public Classical’s Maine Stage program on February 1 @ 8pm and listen to a recent ECMI Midday Concert which featured cellist Sophie Shao and pianist John Blacklow. Click here for station list.

The concert was originally played at Ellsworth Community Music Institute on November 4, 2022 and was offered to the public at no charge with funding assistance from The City of Ellsworth, Birch Bay Retirement Village and a matching gift from an anonymous donor.

Cellist Sophie Shao is the winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and top prizes at the Rostropovich and Tchaikovsky competitions. Ms. Shao was a student of Shirley Trepel, former principal cellist of the Houston Symphony, David Soyer at the Curtis Institute of Music, and Aldo Parisot at Yale College, where she received a B.A. in Religious Studies and an M.M. from the Yale School of Music, as a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow. She is on the faculty of University of Connecticut and plays on a cello made by Hieronymus Amati in 1700.

Hailed by the New York Times for his “powerful and eloquent” performances, pianist John Blacklow has been presented on many of the world's most renowned concert stages. A Steinway Artist, Blacklow graduated from The Juilliard School and Harvard University, studying with John Browning, Leonard Shure, Bella Davidovich, and Tatiana Yampolsky. He currently serves as Professor of Piano at the University of Notre Dame and has recorded for Universal Music, Ltd., Bridge, Albany, and DG/iTunes.

The concert program includes works by Brahms, Schnittke, and Boulanger.
