UPDATED 3/21/20 @ 6:00pm

Warm greetings to our musical community from a good, safe distance! The health and well-being of everyone is our top priority, of course, and to this end, here are some updates on what is going on at ECMI.

The Moore Center is currently closed. This fact, combined with recommendations from health and government officials, means that all group programs, including SCHERZO (our adult chorus) and the free Midday Concerts at 1:00 are postponed until further notice. We do not expect any of our group programs to be continued before the beginning of the 2020-21 lesson year, with the exception of Arthur Russell Week, our small-group summer music camp in Southwest Harbor.

Many of our instructors are offering lessons via Facetime, Skype, Zoom, and other video conferencing platforms that allow personal instruction over the prescribed distance. This connection may prove invaluable to those of you feeling isolated or overwhelmed, whether you live alone, with small children, or with many people! If you would like more information on how to make this happen, please contact us at info@ellsworthcommunitymusic.org and we’ll do our best to help.

And finally, we understand that many of our students and their families are dealing with financial stress on top of the public health emergency. We are relaxing our usual payment policies to include a plan to allow you to pay only for the lessons you are able to have. We will address each student’s needs on a case by case basis, so please reach out to let us know what that is. We can send online invoices once a week or for the entire 8 week quarter or anything in between. The ECMI mission is to enhance community through music, and that mission is more important now than ever before.

Let’s all stay in touch!

All the best,
from all of us at ECMI

UPDATED 3/15/20 @ 3:00pm

We’re sad to announce that the Moore Center will be closed to ECMI beginning tomorrow, March 16, until at least April 6. In light of this decision by the YMCA, all individual music lessons will be taught remotely in the immediate future. You can expect to hear from your instructor regarding a plan for these lessons.

The focus right now is on keeping ourselves and our community healthy, which means we must stay home and apart. For this reason private one-on-one lessons are simply not an option. Luckily, we have the power of the Internet at our fingertips, and may find creative and fun uses that we didn’t know were possible.

This is a temporary situation, though as is the case across our communities right now, how long we will need to adopt these measures is currently uncertain. Please check our website, ellsworthcommunitymusic.org and Facebook page, facebook.com/EllsworthCommunityMusic/  for the most current information and updates, and do not hesitate to be in touch with questions and concerns.

Stay safe and stay well,

The ECMI Board of Directors

POSTED 3/13/20

The health and welfare of our students, faculty, and ECMI community are paramount among our considerations during this time of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). We have been carefully monitoring information from government officials and the Maine CDC, and we have decided to take a proactive approach to protect our cherished community and respond in the most effective way we can.

Ellsworth Community Music Institute has decided to suspend public concerts, group classes, including SCHERZO, and events beginning Monday, March 16 until further notice. Private lessons will continue for the time being; however, there won’t be volunteers at the lesson desk during this period. ECMI is following developments hourly and will update you with any changes or developments. SEE UPDATE on 3/15/20 AT TOP OF PAGE.

If you are a concertgoer, we apologize for the change of plans. Students and faculty, we are working to carry on lessons remotely and you will receive a separate communication about that. We feel that continuing instruction is critical to keep up student progress, good practice habits and ongoing momentum.

During this time of economic uncertainty, please consider supporting our music school with a donation. We have to work together to keep our community afloat and thriving.

Thank you for your patience as we get through this global outbreak. As always, don’t hesitate to be in touch with any questions you may have, and keep playing your music!

Nancy Colter
Executive Artistic Director, ECMI

If you are new to ECMI, please complete a Lesson Inquiry Form prior to registering. You may learn more about lesson offerings and rates here.

At Ellsworth Community Music Institute (ECMI), we create a sense of community through music by providing instruction and performance opportunities for people of all ages, musical abilities, and backgrounds.

Our values are:

  • artistic excellence
  • access for all, and
  • musical friendship

Within the walls of the new General Bryant E. Moore Community Center, sounds ranging from bold beginners to life-long learners to accomplished professionals are heard.  Everyone is made to feel welcome and to be a part of this nurturing, encouraging, and supportive community. Our students experience the joy of playing music in small ensembles, form deep and lasting friendships, benefit from mentors, and share the wonder of performance.
